The sacred promise of Raksha

A thread may be delicate.
Its promise is not.

Before it becomes a celebration, Raksha Bandhan is a quiet vow: to stand beside one another, to wish for each other’s strength, and to keep the bond steady through every season of life.

Raksha Kavach Mantra

येन बद्धो बलिराजा दानवेन्द्रो महाबलः ।

तेन त्वाम् अभिबध्नामि रक्षे मा चल मा चल ॥

Yena baddho Balirājā dānavendro mahābalaḥ
Tena tvām abhibadhnāmi rakṣe mā cala mā cala

Its meaning

“This sacred thread is the same with which the mighty King Bali was bound. With that very Raksha I tie you—may it protect you; may it never waver.”

Traditionally recited while the Rakhi is tied, the mantra invokes divine protection, strength and well-being. Its meaning reaches beyond a single moment: the thread becomes a raksha kavach—a symbol of care that remains even when siblings live far apart.

Some siblings share a home. Others share memories across cities, countries and time zones. Yet a familiar taste can bring the old home close again—the aroma from the kitchen, a meal eaten together, or something lovingly packed and sent with the words, “Take care of yourself.”

This festive collection is our way of carrying that thought forward. A jar of traditionally prepared ghee or an honest pantry staple is more than a product when it is chosen for someone you love. It becomes nourishment, remembrance and a wish for their well-being.

Tie the thread. Remember the promise. Send something chosen with care.

A simple traditional ceremony

How the Rakhi is traditionally tied

Family and regional customs may differ. These are the familiar central steps, performed with affection and a prayer for one another’s well-being.

  1. 01

    Prepare the thali

Arrange the Rakhi, diya, kumkum or roli, akshat rice and a sweet on a clean ceremonial plate.

  2. 02

    Apply tilak and akshat

Place the tilak on the sibling’s forehead and gently add a few grains of rice, offering a wish for strength and well-being.

  3. 04

    Perform aarti

Move the lit diya gently in a small circular motion, keeping the flame safe and steady.

  4. 05

    Share sweets and blessings

Offer a sweet, exchange blessings and gifts, and honour the lifelong promise of mutual care.
